MOROCCO TREKKING IN DJEBEL SAGHRO
This small mountain massif lies between the Central High Atlas chain and the enormity of the Saharan desert. Of volcanic origin, this region is still being sculpted by the Moroccan elements. The erosion is very varied, with its tabular massifs, basalt peaks and deep gorges.
Your trek here will be 8 days long and take you on a tour of this severe and beautiful place. The Djebel Saghro peak, at 2800m dominates the tumultuous landscape and the land itself is pockmarked with numerous tiny villages populated by the tribe of Aît Atta. Whilst you are travelling through, you will trek through the Black Mountains, explore the Berber villages, experience the local culture and cuisine and pass by what is known locally as 'a gigantic head of bones'.
All of the guides and members of your team are locally sourced, qualified and experienced individuals. Your safety and enjoyment are at the top of their agenda at all times. Remember that all treks can be altered to suit your needs.
Day 1: Marrakech – Quarzazarte – Qalaa M’gouna – Saghro – Taourirt
Your first day will take you straight from the airport to the Saghro region. After you have been met by your team, you will travel to Taourirt via Quarzazarte and Qalaa M’Gouna to meet your mules and their handlers. The day will be about 5 hours of driving.
Day 2: Taourirt – Amalou N’ouchhene
After loading the mules, you and your group will head out into the Saghro region, through rose bush fields toward the Black Mountains for a day of trekking that lasts approximately 5 hours. When you reach where you will spend the night, a bivouac in Amalou N’ Ouchhenne, you can look out over the immense vista of the High Atlas, as it reaches heights of over 4000m.
Day 3: Tizi’n’tagmout – Assaka Ait Ouzzine
From Tizi’n’Tagmout at 1950 m, you and your party will trek down to visit the village of the same name. From there, you will head on out toward Assaka Aït Ouzzine, a village where you will bivouac at the end of your 6 hour day. You will also pass the beautiful Tizi’n’Tagmout Pass on your travels.
Day 4: Assaka Ait Ouzzine – Akerkour – Irhazzoun’n’imlas
The 4th day will consist of 6 hours of trekking and take you past the sheep pens of Akerkour and through Irhazzoun’N’Imlas, a hamlet of pisé dwellings, to make camp there.
Day 5: Irhazzoun’n’imlas – Tadaout’n’tablah – Tizi‘N’taggourt – Igli
4 hours of trekking will bring you deep into the saghro region and introduce you to some wonderful sights. tadaout’n’tablah appears as a forest of rocky peaks and at tizi‘n’taggourt, you will encounter what has been described as ‘a gigantic head of bones’ at the plateau. your bivouac will be at igli, an area populated with some houses and cultivated farming areas.
Day 6: Igli – Tizi Ouarg – Ouarg
After an early morning, you and the group will travel up into the Djebel Saghro ridges and trek to the northern slope through Tizi Ouarg, with a simply stunning view of the massif. After 6 hours, you’ll make bivouac camp in Ouarg.
Day 7: Ouarg – Dades – Ouarzazarte – Tichka – Marrakech
Heading out in the morning, you’ll arrive at Boumane, near Dades, before arriving in Ouarzazarte. After Ouarzazarte, you’ll carry on to the Tichka Pass before arriving in Marrakech in the middle of the afternoon. After 6 hours of travelling, you can have a shower and a meal at your hotel.
Day 8: Marrakech
The last day is yours to do with as you please.
